3. Mobile Softee 雪糕車

Surrounded by the rumbling crowds and buzzing sounds of the city, the piercingly familiar tunes of “The Blue Danube” beckon customers toward the allure of Hong Kong’s Mobile Softee ice cream. Once you see the iconic red-blue-white trucks paired with long winding lines along the sidewalk, you know you’re at the right place (but not to worry, as the queue usually moves fast). With its simple yet timeless 4-item menu that has endured for decades, you’ll find amongst it the classic soft-serve ice cream cone — which has a nice combination of creaminess and milk richness, although we felt that the sweetness does get overwhelming over time. If you happen to be strolling by though, it’ll still be worth your time to grab one on the go!

Egg waffles are undoubtedly quintessential to Hong Kong, easily topping lists as one of its most popular street snacks. Apart from the traditional plain egg waffle, many stalls have also invented their own modern twists and varieties, with Mammy Pancake being one of them. At Mammy Pancake, innovation meets tradition as they reimagine the classic egg waffle with a creative flair. From savory options like cheese or seaweed to sweet treats like chestnut or banana, there’ll definitely be one that suits your fancy.
Each waffle is made to piping-hot perfection, with a crispy exterior that gives way to a fluffy, pillowy interior. The contrasting textures creates a sensation that is both satisfying and addictive, leaving you craving more with every bite. 5. Australia Dairy Company

This culinary lineup wouldn’t be complete without including this iconic cha chaan teng (茶餐廳) that brings out the essence of traditional Hong Kong dining culture. As its name suggests, Australia Dairy Company is sought-after for its use of high-quality dairy ingredients, featured in signature delights such as its creamy steamed milk pudding or silky smooth scrambled eggs.
In order to make the best out of our brief visit there, we ordered a classic cheese & egg sandwich, a hearty double egg macaroni, a cup of iced coffee, and a bowl of their famous steamed milk. Despite the restaurant’s reputation for brisk service, we were pleasantly surprised by the warmth and efficiency of the staff – the entire spread took barely 5 minutes to arrive! For a smooth experience though, we would still recommend that you decide on your orders well before entering the café.

At the heart of Hong Kong’s exquisite K11 Musea, Gontran Cherrier is like a slice of Paris in Hong Kong. Named after the acclaimed baker himself, its bakery whips up a delightful range of bread, pastries, and sandwiches with a unique flair. Equipped with everything from classic baguettes to mouthwatering croissants bursting with chocolate, every bite truly showcased their dedication to the craft.
While you can always grab a seat at the café and soak in the ambiance, we opted to take away from the adjacent bakery due to the long queue. Our selection included a delectable garlic croissant (a must-try!), an almond croissant, and a tempting chocolate scone. Rumor has it that their original butter croissants are equally divine, making Gontran Cherrier a must-visit for pastry lovers in Hong Kong.

Specially for boutique café lovers and the caffeine addict, FINEPRINT HK stands out for its specialty Australian coffee and sourdough toast. Stepping into its cozy interior, the café provides a welcoming retreat from the city’s hustle and bustle, inviting patrons to relax and savor moments of tranquility. From expertly crafted espressos to freshly made eggs on toast, each sip and bite felt warm and comfortable.
The café that we visited was at a fairly quaint location on South Lane, merely a stone’s throw away from the HKU MTR station. As it was relatively far from the main touristy areas, it was also relatively easy to avoid crowds especially in the early opening hours. As far as this outlet goes, the service was impeccable, and the staff were patient and friendly as well!

Hong Kong egg tarts are a culinary delight that captivates locals and visitors alike with their flaky pastry crust and luscious egg custard filling. Yet amongst the myriad of establishments serving up this iconic delicacy, Bakehouse stands out as a haven for egg tart aficionados in Hong Kong. Although relatively new compared to some of the city’s longstanding bakeries, Bakehouse draws inspiration from both traditional European baking techniques and contemporary culinary trends, striking a balance between authenticity and innovation.

Honorable Mention — Vission Bakery

Situated along the world’s longest outdoor escalator, the Central—Mid-Levels Escalator, this corner store bakery deserves a spot on its list as well. Living well up to its hype, the bakes looked incredibly delectable and mouthwatering. Although we arrived in the late evening when most goodies were already gone, we were fortunate enough to snag a slice of their banana cake, making it our special pick!
